The scholarship is named for Michael Rood, long-time adviser to the Alpha Lambda Zeta chapter of Asnuntuck Community College. He is also a member of the Regional Advisory Board and former regional coordinator. Through his advising within his own chapter and his presentations at regional events, Dr. Rood has helped literally thousands of Phi Theta Kappa members prepare for transfer admission.

This year, your officer team has worked to set clear goals for NERA and we would like to start the new year by sharing them with you. We look forward to building this wonderful organization and we hope that you agree. It is only with your help that we can see these goals actualized.

Goal 1: Build up Communication between NERA Officer Team & Our Membership
Our President, Michelle Nickerson will be communicating with you via E-mail every other week. During that time, I will ask for your feedback and suggestions on things that you think need improving. In addition, we will be sending out our NERA Newsletter once a month again. The newsletter will include updates on YOU, our members, what the New England Regional Officer Team is up to and may need assistance with, and what your NERA Officer Team is doing. This newsletter cannot happen without you, so please send us your feedback!

For those of you who have started up or already own your own business, we will be offering you the opportunity to get the word out across New England! That’s right – we’re advertising YOU! This newsletter will be sent out electronically (via E-mail), posted on our Facebook Fan Page and posted on our website! So, please feel free to send us a brief ad about what you would like to share.

We are going to make great efforts to update this website on a regular basis. Here is where you’ll be able to find important documentation such as the newly revised NERA Bylaws, NERA News, and information about the two year-old Michael Rood Transfer Opportunity Scholarship created by NERA.

Goal 2: Fund Raising!

In 2009, NERA launched the Michael Rood Transfer Opportunity Scholarship to assist community college students in New England in funding their application fees. Since then, we have expanded the purpose to include any costs associated with transferring to a four-year university. (Costs such as: gas for visiting schools, textbooks, etc.) The $100 scholarship was established by N.E.R.A. officers in honor of Michael Rood, Asnuntuck Community College’s Advisor; Regional Advisory Board Member; Former NE Regional Coordinator and member of NERA for his endless dedication to teach students how to better their chances of receiving scholarships. In response to this honor Dr. Michael Rood donated to the scholarship. NERA is currently offering 2 scholarships to the students of New England.

This year, your officer team reviewed the role NERA has traditionally played in the region and decided to change it up a bit. We are supporting the New England Region by raising funds for this scholarship. We are currently brainstorming and researching fundraising methods to accomplish this task. Our fund raising goal for this year is to raise $500 for the Michael Rood Scholarship. Will you help us?
